Members, groups & permissions
This guide covers the people in your community and what they’re allowed to do. Everything here is in the management area, which requires an administrator account.
Manage members
Section titled “Manage members”Open Users in the management area to see everyone who has registered. From here you can:
- Search and filter the member list.
- Add a user manually or edit an existing one.
- Send a password reset email to a member who is locked out.
- Ban or unban a member, and review the Banned users list.
- Delete a member (see Data privacy & GDPR for how deletion and anonymisation work).
Members register themselves through your sign-up flow; you rarely need to create accounts by hand.
Groups decide capabilities
Section titled “Groups decide capabilities”Rather than granting powers to individuals, InfoEmu grants them to groups and puts members in groups. Every forum ships with a sensible set:
- Administrator — full control, including the management area.
- Super Moderator — moderation across all forums.
- Moderator — moderation within assigned forums.
- Member — an ordinary participant (the default for new sign-ups).
Open Groups to review, add, edit, or delete groups. Each group carries the capabilities (post, moderate, administer, and more) that its members inherit.
Assign forum moderators
Section titled “Assign forum moderators”A member can moderate a specific forum without being a global moderator. When you create or edit a forum (Forums → edit), add members to its Moderators list. They get moderator powers in that forum only.
How permissions are decided
Section titled “How permissions are decided”Under the hood, access is enforced by InfoEmu’s Gatekeeper system. For most communities the built-in groups are all you need. When you want something more precise — “editors can delete posts but only in the Blog forum”, say — you can build rules and attach them to protected actions without touching code. See Fine-grained access control.
Invites and the invite economy
Section titled “Invites and the invite economy”If you run an invite-only community, members with the right permission can invite others:
- Turn on invitation required under Settings → Authentication to gate registration behind an invite code.
- Members invite from their account (Invites), supplying an email and an optional expiry.
- As an administrator you can grant invite points to members from Users → add invite points, controlling how many invites each member has.
See Collect sign-ups with a waitlist for the pre-launch alternative.
